The Light Thing: GE LED+ Color Changing Light Bulbs

I have always wanted smart lighting, but didn't want to essentially have a hackable hub with minimal controls regarding security (It has to have improved since 2018, right? Right?).

So, seeing these lightbulbs that did not require a hub setup, an app, and only cost 5$ (On clearance, I got mine at my local Target, originally the GE LED+ Color Changing Light Bulbs are about 17$-25$!), it would have been stupid to leave them behind. This is not an affiliate link, you can find them here.

The subjects for these will be a variety of dolls in colors ranging from almost pitch black to stark white and things in between to really show off the color scope.

Set-Up:

Screw the lightbulb in a port. The remote already has batteries, and you take out that plastic bit. That's it!

The remote is flimsy. With stronger remotes, you can point at a wall and the waves still manage to be read by the technology, but I'm not a wave scientist.

Despite that, with 16 colors, 4 lighting strengths, warm white and stark white, and a timer, there's a lot to like here. The numbers on the image correspond to what they do below.

  1. On/Off Button
  2. Timer (above the 2)
  3. Strobe flash between colors
  4. Smooth fade between colors
  5. Minus intensity
  6. Add intensity
  7. Colors (two shades of each)

For 1, 2, or 8 hours. I like setting it for 1 hour and when it flashes off, that means it's time to stop playing Splatoon 3 and time to go to bed.

Here's a few shots of the color variants of the GE LED+ Color Changing Bulbs: I'm using two characters for these subjects; The whitest and darkest dolls I have, so you can see the difference.

My photography setup has been broken up into pieces, so I can't find my stark-white background to show you a true impact of the color. I may end up using something similar to Toy Box Philosopher grey.

Rainbow High Shanelle Onyx in 100% Red, 100% Orange, 100% Yellow, and Stark Light:

Monster High Spectra Vondegeist Signature (From 2014-ish, not the 2024 Rerelease) in stark Light (which shows the actual color of the wall), 100% Purple, and 100% Pink light.

A Made to Move Barbie with a human skintone; in Warm Light, 100% Purple, and 100% Pink light.

I also flip between the two color options for the blue light. All of the colors have these options. 25% blue light 2 is possible!

Monster High Signature Torelai and Signature Clawdeen in stark white light with a video of it in smooth fade action. I'm not going to throw a strobe in your face, that's rude.

I put the bulbs in two lamps about 300 ft apart, and because of that remote's weakness, I have them operating independently of each other.

I think the GE LED+ Color Changing Light Bulbs (Yeah whoo SEO! Let's say it a 5th time!) were fairly well priced at their original point for something with no set up. 5$ is a steal. I actually bought another for my mother.
