A cross post from a post on LinkedIn, as the site has a habit of eating posts these days with the dreaded covid-19 hashtag.
This is very interesting.
🎥There are points in the article where AMC is going "Well, they SAY they have a 'lucrative licensing deal' and so need to put this movie out sooner rather than later. We don't believe them, but okay.'. Apparently, Universal has toyed with this release model for awhile, and #covid19 gave them a reason to do so.
👀Remember that Universal is not the only studio to have pushed some films to streaming - WB's "Scoob!" and Disney's "Artemis Fowl" - But those studios also have a ton of movies guaranteed to bring in big bucks.
Universal owns a LOT of big franchises. Fast and Furious. Jurassic World. Illumination (Minions, Sing, all that). Dreamworks. Will any of them enter the $1B club again?
I find all of this endlessly fascinating. AMC is the largest theater chain in the world, and not playing movies in the US, Europe, or Middle East is, whoa.
I don't expect this holdout to last by the time "F9" comes out. #movies

🤔"What
about Universal?"
They pushed those films ("F9", "Minions: The Rise of
Gru") to next year. Theaters would need the money now, and the other
studios mentioned have at least 2 films they're hoping to be released in
July 2020 ("Tenet" and "Mulan", respectively).
